At Joby Aviation, we are driven by our goal of creating an affordable, all-electric, global air transportation system. Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, and then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying our aircraft and scaling our global operations.
Joby Aviation is leading the industry by introducing a revolutionary urban air mobility aircraft featuring the innovative all-electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) JAS4-1 air vehicle. The Modeling and Simulation (M&S) team seeks a highly motivated engineer to help deliver the JAS4-1 vehicle to the marketplace. This role requires a willingness to learn and develop a range of knowledge and skills that include executing tests in a flight simulator environment, post-flight analysis, comparison of experimental data to models, and all other tasks related to the development and validation of models for an eVTOL.
Responsibilities
- Support verification and validation activities that rely on the model outputs
- Support models development for real-time simulation, performance predictions, and various analyses
- Develop and improve the software methods behind the modeling tools and workflows
- Document models’ correlation and validation against experimental data
- Work closely with other engineers/teams to determine the required model accuracy
- Collaborate with test pilots to improve the model fidelity based on feedback from simulator sessions
Required
- B.S. in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a relevant discipline
- 5-7 years of industry experience or advanced degree (PhD/MS/MEng) in related discipline and 2+ yrs industry experience
- Excellent problem-solving, software debugging, and communication skills
- Experience with Python, MATLAB, and Simulink
- Experience with configuration control and management of models
- Understanding of aircraft and rotorcraft aerodynamics
- Ability to work in groups and individually
Desired
- Understanding of aircraft stability and control derivatives
- Understanding of regression and system identification methods
- Basic understanding of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) principles
- Previous experience working on an aviation certification program
- Experience or exposure to C++
