Akima Global Logistics, LLC (AGL) is seeking a Safety Manager at National Institutes of Health (NIH) Bethesda, MD. The Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing safety programs specific to Vertical Conveyance Systems (VCS) Includes elevators, escalators, ADA lifts, dumbwaiters, and material lifts service and repair operations. Provides leadership, training, and field support to promote a safe work environment for all elevator technicians and project teams.
Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive Safety and Occupational Health Program aligned with OSHA, DA PAM 385-10, AR 385-10, and NIH standards.
- Conduct routine inspections, audits, and hazard assessments across shops, warehouses, administrative spaces, and production lines.
- Lead accident investigations, root-cause analyses, and corrective action plans to prevent recurrence.
- Coordinate and deliver mandatory safety training, including hazard communication, PPE usage, lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space, forklift/material handling, and equipment-specific safety modules..
- Maintain and update the Safety Management Plan, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and emergency response procedures.
- Serve as the primary point of contact with Safety Office personnel, Government representatives, and internal leadership.
- Track and report safety metrics, trends, near-misses, and leading indicators; provide recommendations for continuous improvement.
- Support incident drills, emergency preparedness, and NIH safety campaigns
- Manages and implements programs to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths, and financial losses.
- Develops accident-prevention and loss-control systems and programs for incorporation into operational policies of organization. Manages and coordinates safety activities, through subordinate supervisory personnel, to ensure implementation of safety activities throughout program.
- Identifies and appraises conditions that could produce accidents and financial losses and evaluates potential extent of injuries resulting from accidents.
- Conducts research studies to identify hazards and evaluate loss producing potential of given system, operation, or process.
- Devises methods to evaluate safety program and conducts or directs evaluations.
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of elevator industry safety hazards and best practices.
- Understanding of OSHA regulations and elevator codes (ASME A17.1/CSA B44).
- Experience conducting job site inspections and safety training.
- Strong communication, coaching, and documentation skills.
- Ability to analyze incidents and recommend corrective actions.
- Proficient with safety management systems and reporting tools.
Desired Qualifications:
- 3–7 years in safety management, ideally in the elevator or construction industry.
- Relevant certifications such as OSHA 30, CHST, CUSP, CSP, or elevator‑specific safety credentials.
